The tournament in Kaufbeuren was getting more and more famous and we from Holland (Ruud Martin, Hans van Mierlo and Hein Veldhuis) participated in this tournament for the first time.
"The first time" you never forget, and that certainly applies to us. Ruud Martin with his innovative Resurrection module even managed to win the tournament and thus established his name in the chess computer world in one fell swoop. To Kurt Kispert I showed some binders with a database of almost all micro chess computers that ever appeared on the commercial market. Kurt was impressed and I will leave it at that.
What else is etched in our memories? Hotel Goldener Hirsch had a basement for parking the car. You could access that at your own risk via a car elevator and the basement itself was incredibly narrow and small to maneuver. Years later (around 2010), that elevator disappeared and you had to negotiate via a very short and steep ramp with an estimated gradient of 35%!
The small disco and cocktail bar at the front of the hotel which you could reach from the inside via the toilet room was fantastic, and also our visit to the Blauer Engel nightclub is always remembered. The overall concept left a crushing impression on us and laid the foundation for our annual visit to Kaufbeuren!
