On October 18 and 19, 2003 we played the 8th CSVN Users Tournament in Leiden. A tournament with the strongest chess computers that we as participants could use. It turned out to be an exciting tournament. Some regular visitors such as Joop Hooglugt and Theo Heukels were also present. The differences in strength were so small that at the start of the last round there were still four contenders for 1st place.
The games were played with one hour thinking time per color for the entire game. Always an extra dimension to play with an external chess clock, because the operators can then change the playing levels at their own insight during the game. So it can happen that an operator makes a wrong choice and gets into serious time trouble! But all these factors are part of our tournament, which also makes it extra exciting for all participants.
In the end, Ruud Martin managed to win the tournament with the TASC R40 ''Turbo''. The additional designation ''Turbo'' was pure bluff and was part of Ruud's psychological warfare! But as an opponent, aren't you quickly impressed and therefore somewhat thrown off balance? It's all part of the game at such a tournament. At the tournament in Kaufbeuren we also often see such tricks that are just possible, or just not possible.
It is remarkable to see how fast technology is moving. In 2001 the chess programmers in their mutual tournament were still massively using those huge thick screens. And what do we see now in 2003? Only flat screens! Would you like to replay some games? You can do so via the weblink below. Finally, I would like to give the names of the participants and their chess computers.
