Starting in 1990, I occasionally organized a computer chess event for chess club Schavo from Tilburg. I was a member of this club for many years, and on May 13, 2003 it was the turn of the 5th edition of chess against computers. Not a duel, but just single games. The short video recordings were made by yours truly and the location was in the old PvdA building at Melis Stokestraat 40 in Tilburg.
For this event I invited Louis van Bever (from Bussum) with his Tasc R30. He played with this strong machine against Mark Clijsen. Unfortunately, after all these years I can no longer name all participants and chess computers, let alone what the results were. Frank Vennix helped me with a number of missing names of the participants, but a complete overview will probably no longer be possible. I also heard from Frank that a number of participants have passed away in the meantime. Let it be a small reminder and consolation if relatives get to see this video.
What I see and remember I like to describe in the following timeline:
At 0:00, on the front right is Bert van Dorp working with the CXG Enterprise S.
At 0:04, Eric van Dongen can be seen against the Mephisto München with MM IV module.
At 0:15, Henk Nuijten on the left and Ton van Moorsel on the right with the CXG Professor are in view.
At 0:30, Jan Onderwater is unassisted fighting the CXG Super Enterprise.
At 0:44, left is Jos de Kort and right is Ernest van Moorsel with the Mephisto Super Mondial sparring.
At 1:09, the cheerful Harrie Cools can be seen on the left and the person opposite him is unknown to me.
At 1:28, in the middle of the video, Erik van Ingen can be seen with probably the Mephisto MM V.
At 1:42, on the left is Tom Vereschildt and on the right with red cap I don’t recognize.
At 1:48, behind the bar, Stefanie Dirks is busy serving drinks and other refreshments.
At 2:05, Louis van Bever can be seen as operator of the Tasc R30 and Mark Clijsen on the right.
At 2:23, Rick van Loy is competing his forces against probably the Mephisto Polgar program.
At 2:28, Bert-Jan Panjoel is battling the Mephisto Modular with probably the Magellan module.
At 2:35, Berry Brand is in the picture with the Saitek Renaissance with probably the Brute Force modul.
At 4:09, Rob van Moorsel on the left and Frank Vennix on the right are fiddling with the Mephisto Mondial.
At 5:28, we see two standing spectators with Wendy Carol on the left and Bram van Huijgevoort on the right.
Unfortunately, I no longer recognize any participants or spectators, but I did hear the name Paul van Duijnhoven. Eric van Dongen played against the Mephisto München MM IV and miraculously I remember that he managed to win and was very happy about it. The whole evening was just fine and relaxed, often with a nice beer and the occasional cigarette. Yes, cigarette smoking in the playing room was still possible back then!
