Many years ago, Rob van Son sent me a video about Robochess, and I recently came across this material again. When I asked Rob about it, he thought it would be a great idea to put the footage online. I would like to give the opportunity to Rob van Son, the creator of the video footage, to share his thoughts:
When in the autumn of 2001 an article in the Haarlems Dagblad newspaper announced that a certain Hans Lammers had built a chess robot from old materials, I immediately contacted Hans and interviewed him. That same year I visited him again, but this time together with Hein Veldhuis, who then captured this miraculous creation called Robochess on film.
From 27 June to 6 September 2009, the summer exhibition ''The Robot Show'' was on display at the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam. Hans Lammers, through his contact with NEMO employee Hans Slemmer, was given the unique opportunity to demonstrate his Robochess to the public twice a week. On 10 July 2009, I visited him at the NEMO, this time equipped with my digital photo camera, which can also film just fine.
Enjoy Robochess in action and the fun interaction with his spiritual father, the very talented Hans Lammers!
Rob van Son schreef een prachtig artikel over Robochess, zie: Nederland heeft een Robochess!
Rob van Son also wrote about Robochess in Selective Search, see: A real 21st Century Robot
And here is another article by Rob: Chess Robots are still around!
Er is nog een video over Robochess en die is hier te zien: Hans Lammers en zijn Robochess
Who is Rob van Son and what is his relationship with computer chess and chess computers? You can find that information here: Chess Programming Wiki
With kind regards from Hein Veldhuis, dated November 1, 2025
